Eye Works • Youth Connections Award
 |
Dr. Claude Anderson of Eye Works offers a professional workplace for Indianapolis Met students interested in medical careers, teaching real-world optical skills and how math is used in the medical profession. |
“Mentoring is fun,” he says. “It sets a nice example for kids.”
Indianapolis Met student Shaquayla Robertson, who wants to be a nurse practitioner, says her internship gives her insight into the medical field.
“This internship with Dr. Anderson is helping me prepare for my career because I meet multiple doctors,” she says, “and it prepares me for the different patients—how they act and react.”

General Services Administration
Employment Connections Award
In 1996, Goodwill began providing cleaning services for the General Services Administration under what now is known as the AbilityOne program. The partnership between the General Services Administration and Goodwill has grown to employ 108 people, 80% of whom have severe disabilities, at three federal buildings in Indianapolis. Goodwill employees clean more than 2 million square feet of office space and provide snow removal services and grounds maintenance at each site. “We have a special opportunity to support Goodwill’s mission through the AbilityOne program,” says Michael Little, General Services Administration procurement team leader.
